Top Gear V2 Is Still Really Really Good

Top Gear V2 with Clarkson, Hammond & May (2002-2015) is just really really good. Just watching this episode you can see how good Clarkson is reviewing Jaaaagggggsssss... Hammond all excited about the new MX-5, The news, SIARPC... it just works. For the v3 version with McShouty and LeBlanc they should have re-did the whole format. At least we have the Grand Tour for a few years.

I really miss Top Gear V2.

Chris Harris, Matt, Rory and Sabine are okay but they don’t have the same level of passion mixed with hilarity that the old three had. Rory and Chris have the passion that makes the cars seem like more than cars but they lack the sense of awe that the three had when they were telling a story.

Even the edits don’t seem quite the same. The new edits are still very beautiful but they lack the sort of edge and crazy transitions that the old Top Gear V2 had. Even the music choice isn’t as magical as it used to be. I guess that’s most likely because most of the crew left with the trio.

The Disco Volante review was one of my all time favorite reviews. Clarkson goes beyond just talking about the car. He makes it as if it were a living object and gives the car a human element that the new hosts just don’t. The editing is marvelous and combined with the music just gives me chills down my spine. Every. Single. Time.

Yeah, I had a rant about this a few months ago . I never watched Top Gear just for the cars, it was always for the people. It’s why I cringe at Top Gear USA and why I don’t really want to try Top Gear V3 for fear of punching a hole through my screen. Lately I’ve been watching Clarkson’s Car Years and James May’s Cars of the People in addition to V2 reruns in order to get my TG trio fix. Those three plus Tiff Needell are some of the best motoring presenters in history IMO. They can never be replaced. Simply the best. Ambitious, and not rubbish.

The Disco Volante is so much better looking than the 8C that it's almost inconceivable that it could adapted from one.

I hear that. It’s so beautiful. I love his quote of “a Maserati heart, an Alfa Romeo badge, exhausts made out of Otis Redding and a hand crafted body to die for.” So much hyperbole but it just sends shivers down my spine. Something about that just makes me feel the car is more than just an inanimate object.

I think there are parts where it’s too fabricated, and it really upsets me. They don’t need to do that! By all reports they’re great when they’re not scripted anyway.
